The Oracle of Delphi is located at the foot of Parnassus. Facing it, there lies a lush green valley. How was Delphi selected as a sacred site? In ancient times, shepherds noticed that when their sheep were grazing at a certain point, they had weird seizures. They approached the spot and saw that there was formed a deep crack in the ground, from where steam emerged, which caused excitement and hallucinations. The hallucinogenic vapour was emitted stemming from an underground watercourse. Humans thought that from that point they would be able to communicate with Mother Earth. Thus, the spot was considered sacred.
How was that communication between Mother Earth and humans realised? People went and slept there. Through their dreams, Mother Earth gave them answers to their problems. Apart from Mother Earth, in Delphi, there was worshipped her husband, Poseidon, the god of the sea and the water element on the whole. Poseidon revitalised the Earth’s water. In Delphi, there were built two temples, one dedicated to Mother Earth and one dedicated to Poseidon.
